One of the things Thomas and I have observed over the years is that a hand job is one of the best ways to judge whether or not a lubricant is up to scratch. Nothing, it seems, can burn through a poor quality lubricant faster than a palm stroking a penis and, as such, we decided to take a slightly different approach to reviewing these two lubricants from Yes Yes Yes …

Basically, I touched Thomas. A lot!

The packaging
Incredibly inoffensive. Both the oil- and water-based lubricants are contained in light green boxes with the Soil Association’s stamp of organic approval displayed on the side. The bottles themselves are squeezable plastic.

The only thing I would say? It’s not particularly easy to tell which lubricant is which from the packaging; there is little to distinguish the boxes or the bottles other than subtle accent colours and, if you were in a hurry, I think it would be quite easy to get them mixed up. If you’re just after some lubrication, period, that’s not necessarily a problem but if you accidentally used the oil-based lubricant with a condom, that could equate to a disastrous breakage/disintegration of the latter. Not good if you’re trying to avoid getting pregnant and/or protect yourself from STIs.

In use

Yes oil-based
Because we use condoms as our main form of contraception, oil-based lubricants are normally a no-no for us, and, to that end, this is actually the first time we’ve ever tried one out. When it first came out of the bottle, I have to say I was somewhat surprised by the texture. I was expecting something quite liquid but this Yes oil-based lubricant is relatively solid with a consistency not dissimilar to a facial exfoliant. I’ve nothing to compare it to, however, so I can’t say whether this sort of viscosity is usual for an oil-based concoction or not. In any case, it spread very nicely over my hands and, subsequently, Thomas’s penis, melting with the heat of our respective bodies.

There were no complaints from Thomas about the texture or feeling of it once applied and, even better, a little went a pretty long way. I did need to reapply a little extra lube while masturbating him but, in general, the slickness of this oil-based formula lasted far longer than all of the water-based formulations we’ve tried in the past. And fewer ‘lube application’ breaks meant that the manipulation was infinitely more pleasurable for him. (No stopping at crucial moments!)

Taste? Not the nicest lube I’ve had in my mouth. If you’re planning on giving your partner oral sex I would probably suggest choosing a lubricant that’s a little more friendly on the palate.

Washing the oil-based lube off ourselves wasn’t too difficult but because it is slightly greasier than a water-based formulation, we did need to use a little extra soap to remove it completely.

Yes water-based
Thomas’s first comment after the fact: ‘That has a really nice texture’.

I agree. Water-based lubricants are a sex staple for us and I’ve lost count of the different types and brands that we’ve tried. You’d think that they’d all be much of a muchness but can they vary incredibly wildly in taste, colour and texture.

This Yes water-based lube isn’t clear – it actually has a slightly cloudy colouring to it – but is incredibly slick and liquid. Very easy to extract from the bottle and like its oil-based sibling, this lubricant spreads really easily; you don’t need gallons of it get everything nice and moist. However, friction does tend to eat it up faster, so I needed to re-apply it a bit more regularly to both Thomas and my hands.

I thought the taste of this one might be a little better than the oil-based Yes but, unfortunately, it didn’t have a particularly great or neutral flavour. Again, I’d recommend choosing something else if you’re planning on using your tongue and mouth on your partner.

In summary
Two very nice organic lubricants, both of which perform well. The water-based formula, in particular, has a great texture and the oil-based option is definitely worth trying if you’re planning on engaging in a long session of stroking or sex – it really does keep things slippery for longer. Just keep in mind that the latter can’t be used with condoms.

Things I liked:

  • The texture of the Yes water-based lubricant;
  • The longevity of the Yes oil-based lubricant;
  • The way both Yes lubes spread when applied.
  • The slipperiness!

Things I wasn’t so keen on:

  • It’d be pretty easy to get these lubes confused if you were in a hurry or fumbling about in the dark – the packaging is extremely similar and the text on the bottles and boxes very small;
  • The 25ml bottles won’t likely last long;
  • The organic ingredients are going to cost you – these Yes lubes aren’t particularly cheap.

  1. I’ve not tried the oil-based, but I adore Yes’ water-based lubricant – it’s been a favourite for a very long time! It’s only downside is that it has a short shelf-life, compared to some other lubricants. Smaller bottles are definitely a plus – when I had a larger bottle I didn’t get through it before it started to go manky (and I go through a fair whack of lube …)

    • Hi, Dee! Thanks for the heads up on the shelf-life; definitely worth knowing when choosing which bottle size to go for. Love your blog, by the way. Jane xxx
