THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS – PART TWO
‘Jack, I need a favour.’ Nick took a deep breath and braced for the explosion. ‘It’s Grace.’
He didn’t have to wait long; his best friend’s voice was like a sonic boom down the phone.
‘What the hell happened?’
He decided not to beat around the bush.
‘She panicked and safe-worded. Ran out of the house before I could stop her.’
‘Jesus Christ. This is exactly why I didn’t want you to go near her in the first place. She bloody works for me, Nick.’ A pause. ‘You didn’t hurt her, did you?’
Nick bristled as a bolt of anger shot through him. ‘I can’t believe you of all people would ask me that. Yeah, I screwed up. Monumentally. But not like that.’
Silence, and then ‘What’s the favour?’
Nick felt a rush of relief wash through him. ‘I need you to go and check that she’s alright. Caelan tried to go after her when she ran out but she drove off before he could get to her. He didn’t want to freak her out more by following her home and I don’t want to scare her more than I already have done.’
‘Have you tried her phone?’
‘She’s turned it off.’
‘I’m leaving now.’
‘Thanks, man. Call me once you’ve seen her.’
‘Will do. And Nick?’
‘Yeah?’
‘I’m sorry. I know you’d never hurt her on purpose.’
Nick cleared his throat.
‘Let me rephrase that. I know you wouldn’t hurt her unless she wanted you to.’
‘Apology accepted. Now go check on our girl.’
Nick hung up, tossed his phone on the bed beside him and rubbed his eyes with the heels of his hands.
‘He going over?’
He glanced up to see Tristan leaning against the doorframe, a Grey Goose in hand.
‘Yeah, he’s on his way now.’
‘I needed a real drink. You look like you could use one, too.’
‘One of those’d be great.’ He nodded at Tristan’s Goose.
‘Be right back.’
He heard Tris’s footsteps fade as he made his way down the hall to Nick’s study.
Shit.
He couldn’t stop thinking about Grace, the way her had body started trembling as she’d descended into full on fight or flight mode. He’d had subs panic on him before but he’d always been able to talk them through it and calm them down. Very few of the woman he’d ever played with had safeworded on him – and even when they had they’d never run out before they’d talked through what had happened. She’d obviously gone somewhere in her head and wherever it was it hadn’t been good.
God, she’d been absolutely breathtaking in the moments before she’d lost it. Although not classically beautiful, Grace was incredibly striking with her dark, auburn hair, creamy skin and hazel eyes. When she’d climbed onto that table with her skirt around her waist, her bare pussy in full view and her head bent in submission, the rush of blood to his cock had been almost painful.
He was jerked out of his thoughts by the cut glass tumbler that appeared in front of his face.
‘Here you go, man.’
‘Thanks.’ He reached for the glass Tristan held out to him, bought it to his lips and took a long swallow. The chilled vodka slid down his throat way more easily than it should have.
The bed dipped as Tris sat down beside him.
‘Caelan is beyond pissed at us, in case you’re wondering.’
They sat in silence for a few moments.
‘Why did you have to threaten her with a gag?’
‘What?’
‘It scared the hell out of her.’
‘Nick …’ Tristan ran a hand through his hair. ‘I know it did and I shouldn’t have done it. And before you say it, the punishment ultimatum was way out of line. I’m well aware of the error in judgement, believe me. Look, I know you don’t want to do this by yourself but I can’t help you – and I shouldn’t have agreed to. I’m over my head. It’s Caelan you need watching you. Not me.’
‘I didn’t read her right. I let her down.’
‘Yeah, you did. But, Nick, you’re finding your feet. You don’t know each other very well and she’s obviously still accepting who and what she is.’ Tristan took a swallow of his own drink before continuing. ‘All the women you’ve topped so far have been a lot more experienced than Grace.’
He looked at Tristan. ‘We’d talked about it. All of it. You and Caelan being here, what she was comfortable doing – what she wanted. She asked me to control her. To get her off balance. I just … How did I mess it up so badly?’
‘Clearly, she’s not ready for some of the things she thought she was. And I sure as hell didn’t help things.’ He drained the last of his vodka. ‘Look, what’s done is done. You need to work out how to fix it.’
‘I’m not sure this can be fixed.’
Tristan clapped Nick on the shoulder before getting to his feet. ‘You can only try. Look, I’m going to head off. Cael’s already left. Call us when you hear from Jack and let us know everything’s alright, yeah?’
Nick nodded and forced himself to look Tris in the face. ‘Will do.’
‘Give it time. She’ll come round.’
God, Nick hoped so. He didn’t say it aloud, but he had his doubts.
