Safeword: QuinacridoneTitle: Safeword: Quinacridone
Author: Candace Blevins
Publisher: Excessica (28 December 2012)
ISBN: 781609827007
Reviewer: Jane

I’m such a geek. First thing I did upon hearing about this book? Googled quinacridone. (It’s a red pigment that’s often used in paints, in case you’re wondering.)

Taking it at face value, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the title, Safeword: Quinacridone seems kind of random – light-hearted and playful in its obscurity, even – and that you’re in for the standard BDSM erotica romp.

Boy would you be wrong.

This is a tale of two people, Cara and Travis, bringing together their respective kinks – objectification and sadism – and, at the same time, creating a functional, romantic relationship. Continue reading

Sexy fingers, sexy Brits, sexy writing. (Yes, this week I’m over-using sibilance in my Alert Me intro.)

Hello Touch May Be the Best Sex Toy Ever Invented
Source: Gizmondo

Behold. A tens machine for your hands.

I think most of us would agree that our fingers are one of the most satisfying masturbatory tools at our disposal. Something that hasn’t gone un-noticed by luxury sex toy brand Jimmyjane, who have taken the humble digit and turned it into a vibrator.

Looking at the pictures in this article, I have to say that, visually, the Hello Touch doesn’t do a lot for me (it looks a bit medical) but I do like fingers to play a significant role in sex, so I’m willing to be convinced. Continue reading

Board Resolution - Joey W. HillTitle: Board Resolution (Knights of the Boardroom
Author: Joey W. Hill
Publisher: Ellora’s Cave (20 January 2010)
ISBN: 9781419925771

What do you call a tale where a woman shows up for a business meeting only to be assaulted, manhandled, stripped naked, rendered immobile by being bound to a specially designed piece of furniture, blindfolded, gagged and forced to submit to her captor and, possibly, his stalwart management team?

Aw, you guessed it – it’s a love story.

Geoffrey Tennyson wasn’t one of those men who felt sorry for himself because he had a daughter and not a son. He just played the hand life dealt – and spent every moment from the day she was born until the day he died instilling in her his own version of the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition. There simply wouldn’t be a situation that would come up in any business negotiation that Savannah wouldn’t be prepared for.

But then Matthew Kensington enters the equation. Continue reading

What we used:  Beginners Basic Lady Lustfinger Mini Vibrator (silver)
From: Lovehoney
Price: £3.99
Material(s): Phthalate-free plastic
Reviewer: Victoria

Small, simple, and inexpensive. Does Lovehoney’s sub-£5.00 Lady Lustfinger Mini Vibrator hit the mark?

First thoughts
Being a bit of a vibrator novice I was very intrigued to receive the Beginners Basic Lady Lustfinger through the post. I hadn’t used a vibrator either with a partner or on my own before (although do own a dildo), so I was looking forward to giving it a whirl.

So first of all, I have to say that I hate the name ‘Lady Lustfinger’; it sounds like a character from an 80s porn film but (thankfully) there’s no porn on the box. On the looks front, the packaging has ‘Basic’ written on the front, and that pretty much sums it up.

The vibrator itself isn’t intimidating at all as it’s only 5.5 inches long (the insertable length is 4.5 inches) but although it is silver I was quite disappointed at how plasticky it felt and therefore how light is was. It didn’t come with any batteries, either, (the Lustfinger requires a single AA) but then for £3.99 you can’t expect everything! Continue reading

What we used: Truth or Dare: A Game of Passion
By: Thrusti Kicki Grabbi
Price: From £10.79 (price varies by retailer)
Material(s): not applicable
Reviewer: Jane

I love games. Trival Pursuit, chess, Cranium, 500, Scrabble … But I have to hold my hands up and say that I had never played a sexy one before Truth or Dare: A Game of Passion. Would it feel contrived? Would it be embarrassing? What sorts of questions and challenges would we encounter? Would it just be a slightly jazzed-up version of the truth or dare gauntlet we used to throw down to friends as teenagers? But most importantly, would it be fun?

I actually bought Truth or Dare as a Christmas present for my husband and must admit it was quite fun watching him unwrap it. It took him a second or two to work out exactly what he had in his hands because the box is rather feminine (it’s predominantly pink and white) and thus it wasn’t immediately obvious what was inside it. Then he noticed the silhouette graphic of a woman spanking a man on his hands and knees with a hairbrush and started to chuckle. Continue reading

The first Alert Me for 2013 is a bit of an eclectic mix. In this edition we’ve got censorship, parody erotic musicals, and a 17th Century sex manual …

Amazon in the Book Banning Business
Source: Selena Kitt, The Self Publishing Revolution

Over the past month or so, a number of authors and readers I’m in contact with via various online book community groups have noticed that Amazon has begun to censor erotica texts. Yes, increasingly, the online retail giant is deciding which saucy books we can and can’t read.

Whilst Amazon’s Direct Publishing service is booming (everyone wants to be the new E.L. James) a growing number of erotica authors are finding that their books are being removed from the sale for violating ‘content guidelines’.

‘Well,’ I hear you say. ‘Stick to the guidelines and there won’t be a problem.’

If only it were that simple. Per the Amazon website: Continue reading

Special Forces: Soldiers (Director's Cut)Title: Special Forces: Soldiers (Director’s Cut)
Author: Aleksandr Voinov
Publisher: Aleksandr Voinov (online only)

Reviewer: Jane

I’m not even sure how to begin describing this book, except to say that it is brutal. You pick it up, you’re entering a warzone – both literally and figuratively.

It’s the 80s and the Cold War is still in full swing. The Russians are in Afghanistan. The Brits are there, too. Unofficially. An August night in Kabul and an SAS solider is raped by a member of the Red Army. This single violent and awful act sets in motion a story of revenge, friendship and love between two men that spans, in this particular instalment of Voinov’s Special Forces saga, nearly a decade.

Special Forces: Soldiers came to my attention through the BDSM Buddy Read feature on Goodreads. From the comments of those who had already started it, I knew it was going to be full-on but I have to admit I was totally unprepared for the level of intensity I encountered. Just a few pages in and I was at once shocked, appalled, and totally hooked, as evidenced by my Soldiers Buddy Read ‘in progress’ status update: Continue reading

Dare

Happy 2013, everyone!

First post back after the break and it’s Toy with me Tuesday. What a nice way to start the year!

So I bought Truth or Dare for my husband as a Christmas present. It was a bit of a stab in the dark – I wasn’t sure what the ‘truth’ and ‘dare’ cards would be like and whether they would suit us – but the game turned out to be a lot of fun, despite that fact that we only got to play once over the holidays. (I managed to get a hideous lung infection just before New Year and couldn’t do much other than lie around breathing like Darth Vader and coughing like a cat with a fur ball.)

Anyway, this sexy game came with a rather groovy little die. Stands out from the crowd, doesn’t it? And I must say, it makes a nice change from throwing a three or a six … Continue reading
