Reviewer(s): Lizzie & Thomas

A crop is a crop is a crop. Or is it? Find out what Lizzie and Thomas think of their newest purchase from U.K.-based Jack’s Floggers.

First thoughts

Lizzie
So, can I just say that my eyes were going all over the place when I saw Jack’s line up of truly beautiful implements at LAM (the London Alternative Market), which is where Thomas and I bought this lovely, lovely riding crop a month or two back. The quality of Jack’s products was abundantly clear but, not only that, they were all, without exception, incredibly stylish. This crop stood out to me, first and foremost, because of the colour – I’m a sucker for red – but as soon as I picked it up, I thought ‘ooh!’. Our current Bondage Boutique crop, the one we reviewed a while back, is now a little worse for wear and, lately, we’ve noticed the keeper has started to part company with the shaft.

Thomas
Like Lizzie, I noticed straight away that this crop of Jack’s looked and felt far superior to our current one. And although they’re both about the same length overall (approximately 27.5 inches from end to end) the leather strop/keeper on his design is much longer (7.0 inches at the attachment point as opposed to 4.5).

Construction

Lizzie
I’ll say it again. This is an absolutely stunning crop and the quality of the craftsmanship is evident everywhere you look: the beautiful braided handle in gloss red leather; the black braided handle butts; the slim, tapered shaft; the soft leather keeper embossed with the Jack’s Floggers logo. Everything on it is neat and tidy, the finishing impeccable, and, basically, it’s just really well made. This isn’t an instrument that’s going to fall to pieces on you in a hurry.

Thomas
This crop is far whippier than our old one (I gave Lizzie a few experimental whacks before buying it and the difference was immediately evident) and it’s definitely better put together as well. The leather keeper is more securely attached to the shaft and the shaft material itself, which is glass fibre, is superior, too. I like that the handle is braided as the uneven surface helps with grip. Overall, the finish is very, very good.

In use

Lizzie
I love the crop. It’s become one of my favourite toy bag items. The threat and tease of it as it’s run or tapped over my body prior to or during a session; the sting of the tip and shaft when it’s applied to my bottom and thighs with force. The ‘smacking’ sound the keeper creates when it hits the skin, too, never fails to send a little thrill of fright through me.

Thomas and I liked our last crop a lot but, wow. It pales in comparison to this one. For starters, Jack’s creation has far (far) more bite than the Bondage Boutique version. The slim, stiff shaft really smarts when it hits and the split keeper seems to give far more sting to the wielder’s flicks and swings. Thomas had to strike relatively firmly to generate bruises with our previous crop. This one? Well, I had some truly spectacular purple keeper-shaped marks on my bottom for far less effort on his part.

If you’re someone who enjoys stingy sensations, this crop is a slice of heaven … and maybe just a little bit of exquisite masochistic hell, too :-).

Thomas
Jack’s crop is far more aggressive than our last one. The shaft is slimmer and stiffer, and the leather strop is softer and longer. This all combines for a lot more whip and a lot more snap in the end – and so a lot more sting. Lizzie wriggles about far more than usual when I use this crop, which tells me I have her undivided attention.

Any downsides?

Lizzie
None that I can think of. Although I would say that the slightly longer-than-we-were-used-to keeper dimensions caught us out a little; Thomas mis-judged a relatively firm hit by a fraction of an inch and ended up catching me between the legs before he intended to do so (he normally warms me up a bit more before going for that spot). I can tell you categorically that a firm swat with this on the clitoris will make you jump about like nobody’s business!

Thomas
As Lizzie mentioned, the only issue with this crop was that I made the schoolboy error of not practising enough with it beforehand and assuming if would behave the same way as our old one. The lesson? Always put a new toy through its paces, even if the overall style is familiar, so that you get the reach right. This one caught me out because I placed it fractionally further into the buttock than I should have (although I don’t think Lizzie minded too much ;-).) If you are used to a crop with a short, unsplit keeper, you will need to be extra careful with your aim until you get used to it.

The verdict?

Lizzie
A superb riding crop that is amazingly priced, beautifully made, and a joy to be on the receiving end of. If you like sting with style, this is £12.00 you won’t regret parting with.

Thomas
A very nice crop nice to hold and use and very effective (especially when applied to the clitoris!).

In summary

Things we liked:

The finishing. Truly beautiful.

The design. Sting city!

The price. At £12.00 this is a total bargain.

Being able to try before we bought. Jack (and his stall) were fab. But he also offers a great online service, with worldwide shipping, if you can’t make it to the London Alternative Market.

Things we weren’t so keen on:

Nothing!

The Swoon Shimmy. Nope, it’s not a new Strictly Come Dancing routine but a little bullet vibrator from the folks over at Lovehoney. The question is, did it make Lizzie want to tango? And was she Driven Balmy?

First thoughts
The Shimmy is the first new vibrator that I’ve tried out in what seems like ages (we’re talking calendar months!) and, I have to say, I was quite looking forward to putting it through its paces. That said, I haven’t come across a vibrator that’s really knocked my socks off for quite some time, big or small, so wasn’t getting my hopes up too high for the size and the price of this one. I do have a bit of a thing for lotions and potions that stimulate the clitoris, though, so was very interested to see how the Swoon formulation compared against my current favourite, Durex O.

The packaging
Nice colourways – mint green and black, with flapper-esque photos of the greyscale variety. You can’t really tell that there’s a sex toy inside the box unless you read the copy, which speaks to Lovehoney’s intent to sell the Swoon products through pharmacies such as Boots. Inside the main box, a glossy little tin (featuring identical branding), which opens to reveal the white Shimmy (although it’s billed as a pleasure wand, it’s really a bullet vibrator), a small (7 gram) tub of Drive me Balmy arousal balm, and a spare AAA alkaline battery (there’s one already contained within the Shimmy) – all encased in moulded foam. Very cute, really, and highly reminiscent of the beauty brand Soap and Glory.

The vibrator and balm
Emergency memo to Swoon design department! Who on earth thought that white was a good colour for the Shimmy?! At this size, with the little green waterproof seal stripe, this bullet looks exactly like a tampon.

You even twist it to get to the battery chamber in the same way you would a tampon wrapper. Don’t get me wrong, tampons are great and all, but they don’t scream sexy. They scream personal hygiene. And cramps. Lest you think I’m being overly critical and that I was the only one who made the sanitary product connection, Thomas’s first words to me as he watched me turning the Shimmy over in my hands were ‘That looks like a tampon’. Myself? I would’ve gone for black or green and avoided the whole product confusion issue entirely.

In use

Drive Me Balmy*
So, when I finally got the chance to apply this to myself, I opened the tin up to find that Thomas had already beaten me to it and taken out a sneaky dab to rub on himself during a session we’d had the previous night. (I wasn’t in a position to see him do it but I did recall thinking things seemed to be, er, progressing a little more quickly than usual at the time.) When questioned, he confirmed that he had, indeed, had his fingers in the balm jar and the sensations it created when applied to his penis had been rather pleasant. Naturally, I was keen to see if it would have the same effect on me.

To start with, I applied a little balm to my clitoris with my fingers and then used the Shimmy to spread it around the vulva; it melted very nicely with my body heat and a little seemed to go a reasonably long way. However, I did notice that the Drive me Balmy had a slightly oily texture and thus began to wonder whether it was safe to use with latex condoms – extremely important information if, like Thomas and I, you use them as your main form of contraception. After scouring the paper instructions (no joy) I finally found the following notice in very small print on the bottom of the Shimmy’s exterior box and the Drive me Balmy tin: ‘Not for use with latex condoms’.

The effects? Pleasant. I experienced a mild to moderate cooling sensation (the ‘toothpaste effect’, as I like to call it), which seemed to increase bloodflow and make my clitoris slightly more engorged. As a result, it was easier to stimulate myself with the Shimmy pleasure wand. To be clear, the sensations the balm produced weren’t overly drastic but I could definitely feel something going on down there! Did I prefer it to Durex O? No. But I certainly wouldn’t object to having Drive me Balmy applied to my girly parts in the future.

The Shimmy
When I first switched it on I thought I’d unleashed an angry mosquito. The Shimmy isn’t exactly loud, but neither is it particularly quiet. It has three speed settings – all controlled by a small button at the base – and, at the highest one, it really gets quite a buzz going on.

I started with the Shimmy on the lowest notch but, as soon as I became aroused, dialled things up to the highest. At full power, the vibrations were pleasantly strong – certainly enough to stimulate without vaginal penetration – and I was pleased to find that, in conjunction with the Drive me Balmy, I was having a very enjoyable clitoral orgasm within the space of ten minutes (from a cold start, that’s pretty quick for me). The Shimmy’s size made it particularly manoeuvrable, too, which meant I could get it in just the right places (you can easily run it around the entrance of the vagina, over and around the clitoral hood). Even better, it was the perfect size to stimulate Thomas’s testicles and perineum – which meant I was able to give him a very lovely buzzy hand-job once I’d finished dealing with myself.

Clean-up was short and sweet – because the Shimmy is waterproof, it was the work of a minute to wash it in warm water and antibacterial soap – although I did pay extra attention to the tip of the bullet as there is a moulding notch there that could very easily attract build up.

The verdict?
Because it’s so small and the packaging so inoffensive, I think the Shimmy is perfect for beginners or those looking for something super discrete (this is an excellent travel vibrator) and I had more fun with it than some of the bigger, more expensive vibes I’ve tried over the past year. It’s not super cheap – I think the RRP of £14.99 is a little steep for what you get – but this little bullet is certainly powerful enough to get the job done, especially when coupled with the Drive me Balmy arousal balm. And I loved that both Thomas and I could both use the contents of the Shimmy tin. It would make a lovely, saucy little gift, too.

In summary

Things I liked:

The strength of the Shimmy’s vibrations. It’s small but mighty!

The discrete packaging. No one’s going to glance at the Shimmy tin and think ‘vibrator’.

The fact that both Thomas and I were able to benefit from the vibrator and balm – the size of the former is perfect for man parts and the balm seems to work just as well on men as it does on women.

Things I wasn’t so keen on:

The colour of the Shimmy. The white plastic body really does make it look like a tampon.

The size of the Drive me Balmy tin. Seven grams isn’t a lot and, depending on how much of the balm you apply, I’d say you’re looking at two to five uses, max.

The very small latex condom warning. This needs to be far, far more prominent.

The price. Buying the Shimmy isn’t going to break the bank but, equally, there are some good bullets out there for less than a ten pounds. You’re paying for the packaging with this one.

*Drive me Balmy pleasure balm can be purchased separately from the Shimmy in 20 gram pots.

A few weeks ago Adult Sensations, who have e-stores that serve both Canada and the U.S. (North American Chintz visitors, take note!), were kind enough to send the very stylish Icicles No. 1 dildo to us for review. This is the first toy we’ve reviewed in the Icicles range – there are 42 different designs, last we counted – and the No. 1 is the initial design in the series.

First thoughts …

Lizzie
Glass is fast becoming one of my favourite sex toy materials. It’s easy to clean, can be cooled or heated, and has a firmness to it that I find really, really pleasing during use (more on the later). Needless to say, I was really looking forward to trying the Icicles No. 1 out.

I don’t normally buy ‘straight’ dildos – generally I opt for ones with a curve so that I (or Thomas) can better target my G-Spot. As such, the No. 1 was a bit of a departure from the path most trodden. I also tend to be a bit sceptical of ridged toys, often finding that the various bumps and protrusions don’t really add that much to the experience once they’re inside me. Would the spiralled ridge, which runs the length of the No. 1’s insertable shaft (which is roughly 7 inches long) be any different because of its glass construction?

The packaging …

Lizzie
Very inoffensive and gender-neutral; I would be equally happy giving or receiving this dildo as a gift. The box features a black-and-white colour scheme with some nice, clear pictures of the Icicles No. 1 dildo inside it and has a ‘door-like’ side that can be opened to reveal the toy without breaking into the box itself. The actual dildo is cushioned within a thick block of Styrofoam to prevent breakage during transport and delivery.

One thing that I would have liked to have seen? A storage pouch for the dildo. The box is really too unwieldy to store it in permanently and having something to house the dildo post-receipt would’ve been very handy.

How it looks …

Lizzie
The Icicles No. 1 is really pretty, and looks more like an ornament than a sex toy. (It sort of reminded me of an oversized cocktail mixing stick!)

It’s made from clear Pyrex glass, has a ridge that twists around the insertable length, and a ball-shaped base to help you grip it during use.

In use …

Lizzie
After giving the Icicles No. 1 dildo a good clean with antibacterial soap and toy cleaner, I ran it under the hot tap for a short time in order to warm up the glass. (As mentioned earlier, I think the ability to change this toy’s temperature is a significant plus because it allows you to ‘tweak’ it to suit your mood.) It held the warmth of the water really nicely and this meant that it was very pleasant to insert. No leaping about from the shock of something cold.

Lube-wise, I found I put a bit too much on the toy to start with – I generally subscribe to the ‘more is better’ philosophy, which works fine with glass toys that have ring handles but not so much with those that are more streamlined – and made the dildo overly slippery, but the ball base was relatively easy to grip, despite the overly liberal application. (Tip: try and keep one hand, preferably your ‘operating’ hand, clean of lube so that you can maintain a good, firm hold on the toy.)

Because the dildo is a pretty decent length and made of a rigid material, I went relatively slowly insertion-wise, giving myself time to become accustomed to it. To start with, I kept my movements quite gentle but as I became more and more aroused, I was able to use it with more force. Although it wasn’t curved and couldn’t really be angled to comfortably hit the G-Spot, the firmness of the glass made it easy for me to get the friction I needed to generate some lovely sensations internally.

Using the Icicles No. 1 solo was great fun but, as I generally find it quite difficult to climax without clitoral or G-Spot stimulation, I ended up lying on my stomach and handing control over to Thomas so that I could concentrate on touching my clitoris. He had no trouble gripping or controlling the No. 1 – the ball-shaped base fit easily in his palm – but I did have to ask him to go easier than I would have with a silicone or plastic toy. Result? A very nice, blissful orgasm.

And the ridges? Even though the Icicles No. 1 is relatively slim (it’s 1.4 inches wide) I could definitely feel the external glass spiral on it, particularly around the entrance of the vagina – yay! To borrow a line from Wayne’s World, it really was ribbed for my pleasure!

Any downsides?

Lizzie
The straight shape and rigid construction mean you do have to go a little easy to begin with and take your time finding the best angle; if the dildo presses too hard against the pubic bone or is shoved too deep, too soon, it can be uncomfortable.

In an ideal world it would have liked it to come with a storage pouch, but that’s a small quibble.

The verdict?

Lizzie
The Icicles No. 1 dildo is a lovely, smart-looking toy that’s well made and a pleasure to use. Its slim shape means that it could be used vaginally or anally and the spiral ridge actually seemed to do something, particularly around the entrance to the vagina. I couldn’t really stimulate my G-Spot with it, but found it satisfying all the same. A nice toy to use with a partner, particularly as part of foreplay.

In summary

Things I liked:

It’s aesthetically pleasing. A very pretty dildo.

The construction. Because it’s made of Pyrex, it’s easy to clean, dishwasher safe, can be used in the bath, heated or cooled.

It’s slim enough to use anally.

The ridges really do create some friction, particularly around the vaginal entrance – they’re not just window dressing.

The rigidity. Glass doesn’t give, so you’ve got something decent to press and rub against.

Can be used with silicone, oil, and water-based lubes.

Safe for those with latex allergies.

Things I wasn’t so keen on:

The lack of storage pouch.

Can be uncomfortable if used too vigorously, too quickly.

First thoughts

Lizzie
A quality lubricant in a decent-sized bottle – and at a reasonable price – is quite hard to find. On average, Thomas and I tend to replenish our supply of slippery stuff every two to three weeks. Granted, we’re pretty generous in terms of the quantity we apply to each other but it’s a pain to be constantly buying lube what feels like every five minutes. Enter the 250ml bottle of Liquid Silk.

How it looks

Lizzie
The Liquid Silk lubricant packaging is very simple. The bottle is a good size and resembles the sort you’d buy bathroom handwash in. I like that the pump dispenser isn’t the annoying fixed, squat design you find on the various Durex containers; it screws on, which means that you can unfasten it and get that last bit of lubricant out when you’re nearing the end of your supply. The lube itself is actually a milky white colour, which is quite different to many of the water-based lubricants I’ve used in the past. (The majority tend to be clear.)

In use

Lizzie

True to its name, Liquid Silk does indeed feel really lovely on the skin – incredibly light and silky. The dispenser makes it easy to get just the right amount of lube (a partial pump for a little, a couple of full pumps for a palm full) and it’s a breeze to spread. Best of all it’s not tacky and passes the ‘water test’ with flying colours. (I don’t particularly like lubricants that re-activate and leave behind excessive residue when you run your hands under the tap after use.) You don’t need a great deal Liquid Silk, either, because it spreads so nicely when applied but it is water-based, so you have to reapply it more frequently than you would a silicone-based product. Taste-wise, Liquid Silk isn’t the nicest on the tongue – it has a slightly bitter flavour – but I’ve certainly had worse. The aftertaste takes a minute or so to dissipate, too.

One note of caution. Those who read through the ingredient list at the beginning of this review may have noticed that Bodywise’s Liquid Silk formulation contains parabens. Is that a problem? Well, it boils down to your interpretation of the available research. Some scientific studies claim that parabens, which are used in many cosmetic products, such as shampoos and moisturisers, can be linked to cancer. Specifically, the development of breast cancer in women as parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen. To that end, if you have any concerns about using products containing this particular type of chemical or have a sensitivity to them (parabens can cause skin irritation in some people*), then I would suggest opting for an alternative paraben-free product. You can find out more about parabens here.

*I would classify myself as having relatively sensitive skin and had absolutely no issues with Liquid Silk, despite it having a wider range of ingredients than the organic lube Woohoo! – which I did have an adverse reaction to.

The verdict?

Lizzie
A generous bottle of water-based lubricant that’s pleasant to handle and apply. Great for vaginal and anal intercourse, on toys (we used Liquid Silk when trying out the Pony Play Butt Plug Whip), and to keep things slippery during manual stimulation. Flavour-wise, Liquid Silk has a slightly stronger taste than other water-based lubes I’ve had in my mouth but it’s certainly not dreadful. (I should note here that Thomas found its taste slightly less offensive than I did.) I’d prefer that Liquid Silk didn’t contain parabens, but, for me, their inclusion isn’t a deal breaker.

In summary

Things I liked:

The size of the container. You won’t be buying replacement bottles as often.

The texture. Silky, easy to spread and non-tacky.

The pump dispenser. Makes it easy to get the right amount of lube and can be unscrewed when you reach the end of the bottle, thus enabling you to tap out the liquid at the very bottom.

The price. Despite the bigger initial outlay, a 250ml bottle of Liquid Silk works out cheaper than many other lubricants millilitre for millilitre.

As it’s water-based, it can be used on silicone toys.

Things I wasn’t so keen on:

The taste. Liquid Silk has a slightly bitter tang.

The inclusion of parabens. In an ideal world, this lube wouldn’t have them.

We’ve all been there. That uncomfortable moment during a blow job when he goes that bit deeper and your gag reflex kicks in. It’s not a particularly pleasant feeling. Enter Goodhead Oral Sex Mints. The question is, do they work?

First thoughts

Lizzie
Fellatio is not my forte. I always have the best intentions – and genuinely enjoy doing something that Thomas finds so pleasing – but man alive, my gag reflex is terrible. My technique has improved somewhat over the years and I’ve learned a few tricks to compensate or curtail it slightly (lying on my back with my head hanging over the edge of the mattress to give a nice, straight line to the throat, placement of fingers, angling my head to better use my cheeks, etc.) but I’m no Linda Lovelace. Not even close.

Goodhead Oral Sex Mints claim to repress the gag reflex with a mild anaesthetic, which, in theory, equals a bit of deep throat action for the person you’re fellating. Per the packaging:

‘Numb your throat to take him deeper… with less effort!’

Needless to say, I was intrigued to see whether they really would give me a little more, er, capacity.

How they look

Lizzie
Like sweets. Aside from the penis logo on the tin, you’d be forgiven for confusing them with travel mints but at nearly 40 pence per lozenge, they’re far more expensive.

The effects

Lizzie
The instructions call for the user to place two mints on the tongue and suck them slowly until they dissolve. Now, this is a simple enough task but have you ever timed yourself when sucking a sweet? I suspect not, but it will come as no surprise when I tell you that these Goodhead Oral Sex Mints don’t melt in the mouth immediately; we’re talking minutes rather than seconds before your saliva is able to reduce and break them down to nothing. Ergo, they’re not exactly conducive to spontaneity. (Thomas and I lay in bed laughing and making jokes about sweet flavours while we waited for them to reduce in size the first time we tried them but if we’d been in a fast-and-frantic mood, this delay would have been somewhat annoying. Yes, I know you can still do stuff with a sweet in your mouth but it’s not ideal.)

As I sucked on the mints, I gave Thomas a running commentary of their effects. The first thing I noticed? The top surface of my tongue went numb. Then the top of my palate. By the time I’d finished both sweets, I’d lost all sensation in the former. The back of my throat? Well, it felt somewhat less sensitive but nowhere near as anesthetised as my actual mouth.

When it came to the actual blow job I did feel that I was taking Thomas slightly deeper than usual but I can’t say it was by a massive amount. And he was pretty much of the same opinion. The numb tongue also changed my perception of the blow job a fair bit, too; as mentioned, Goodhead Oral Sex Mints seem to have more of an effect on the former than anything else, which meant I didn’t feel all the sensations I normally would when licking and massaging Thomas’ penis with it. I must admit, I missed them.

Time wise, the effects of the Benzocaine lasted approximately ten minutes on me. However, I was interested to see if I was typical so ended up dolling out the sweets post-dinner party to a bunch of friends like the blow job fairy (certainly a change from the usual after-dinner mints) and asking them to time how long the anaesthetic lasted. The range was between five and ten minutes. In my opinion, that’s not nearly enough time to give someone a decent blow job.

The verdict?

Lizzie
I can’t really quantify how much of a difference these actually made to me. They definitely numbed my mouth and, to a lesser extent, my throat but I certainly won’t be starring in Deep Throat any time soon. Could I take Thomas a little deeper? Yes, but we’re talking millimetres rather than centimetres. That said, I suspect that these may prove more or less effective depending on the person. I’m tempted to try the Goodhead Deep Throat spray, as that can specifically target the back of the throat and would, I assume, limit the ‘numbed tongue’ effect I experienced with these mints. Less waiting around for them to work, too (although I don’t envisage spraying the back of my throat with an aerosol mid-coitus would look particularly sexy). There’s the issue of the anaesthetic’s longevity, too; I suspect its lifespan wouldn’t be significantly different.

In summary …

Things I liked …

Well, I could take Thomas a little deeper, but not much.

The flavour options; these blow job sweets come in strawberry as well as spearmint.

Things I wasn’t so keen on …

The price. These mints make for a rather costly bout of oral sex.

The incredibly numb tongue that resulted from sucking the mints. They seem to kill all sensation in your mouth.

The time it takes for them to work. You need to set aside sweet-sucking time prior to giving your partner a blow job.

Negligible effect on the back of the throat – most of the anaesthetic seems to hit the tongue.

The Benzocaine’s short lifespan.

As Lizzie and Thomas discover, they’re certainly not for the faint of heart – and they’re not just for the top half of the body …

First thoughts …

Lizzie
If you’ve been following Chintz for a while, you’ll know that Thomas and I recently reviewed a set of Japanese clover nipple clamps and that I’m a big, big fan of them (and clamping in general). So when UberKinky asked if we’d like to review their Mawa Klamps, I was pretty keen. However, when I put these little beasts on the tips of my fingers after extracting them from their wrappings and felt how strong they were, I started to get a bit nervous!

Thomas
I am sure I have seen these used on a clipboard, without the rubber pads on the ends. My only issue with this style of clamp (and also clover nipple clamps) is there is no facility to adjust the pressure.

The packaging …

Lizzie
Very utilitarian. The clamps are individually encased in clear plastic. In other words, there’s no official branding.

The construction …

Lizzie
These Mawa Klamps look virtually identical to the bulldog clips you would buy from your local stationary supplier but with one important difference: the ‘gripping’ edges are coated in a soft, black rubber. (It stands to reason you don’t want two sharp metal edges coming together under pressure on the soft skin of a nipple – or other body part.) The ‘force factor’ for each device is created by the spring that connects the two halves of the clamp – and believe me, there is some serious, serious wellie in that coil. Size-wise, the clamps are bigger than a standard screw clamp or tweezer clamp in both length and width (5.5 centimetres and 2.0 centimetres respectively) but they are smaller than most clovers.

I did notice that the clamps we were sent didn’t have the indented weight handles that appear in the UberKinky Mawa Klamps photographs and product description, but this may be because the ones we tested were review samples.

Thomas
They look a bit like office stationary items, which, to be fair, is what you would expect for the price. They are quite strong and of course non-adjustable so I suspect there will be a ‘love-em or hate-em’ response for most people with this item. The construction of the clip and the finish is pretty basic, so make sure you keep them clean and dry as I suspect they may be prone to rusting, etc., if they are allowed to become damp. As Lizzie mentioned, the ones we had were missing the extra hanger bar and I suspect this affected the way ours functioned as their action when squeezed didn’t feel very smooth.

Using them …

Lizzie
After the finger clamping experiment, I was bracing myself for these. I have a pretty decent pain threshold – or at least I think I do – but in a sexual context, I like it to hold hands quite tightly with pleasure. There has to be a balance – and I wasn’t sure whether these were going to tip the scales too far in the direction of ‘it just plain hurts’.

To that end, Thomas made sure that I was well and truly warmed up before coming at me with the Mawas – I’d had two orgasms, so was nicely aroused and at the same time relaxed – and he used his mouth and teeth to make sure that my nipples were erect enough to cope with the pressure of them. (As I mentioned in my last nipple clamp review, don’t try and clamp nipples when they’re in a ‘soft’ state; it’s really important that you and/or your partner ensure that they’re hard before any hardware comes at them. An erect nipple can take a lot more stimulation and it also means more blood will be trapped when a clamp is applied – which equals a more intense sensation when they’re removed.)

The feeling? Full-on. But, interestingly, I didn’t find the Mawa Klamps much more difficult to cope with than clovers, because while they generate a lot of pressure, the clamping edge is relatively broad – and that means that the force they apply is spread over a larger surface area. Thomas didn’t leave the clamps on my nipples for an extended period first time, though (he’d put them on his fingers, too, and knew how strong they were!) – just long enough to distract me with other activity and make me forget about the ache they induced before he removed them and caused the rush of pleasure/pain that heralds the return of blood flow.

However, Thomas wasn’t finished with me. Moments after removing the Mawa Klamps from my nipples, he headed in the direction of my vulva. And then there was a sharp intake of breath, followed by a scrunching of toes on my part as he attached one to each side of my labia. I’ve not had clamps applied to this area before and, strangely, found the sensation to be neither here nor there. Yes, their presence was uncomfortable, but this part of my anatomy seems to be less sensitive than my nipples. Consequently, the discomfort was over-ridden by other feelings as Thomas moved on to other things. The removal of the clamps was more a relief than anything else; I didn’t experience the same achy rush I got when they were taken from my nipples.

Thomas
These little clips work well and are easy to use. They were secure when in place (despite not having small dimpled gripper pads of our Japanese clover clamps), which was good as I had visions of them slipping off and shooting across the room like small bullets. If you and your other half are using these for the first time, I would advise a slow application and thus a gradual increase in pressure to make sure your partner is not going to suddenly leap up and run round the room screaming ‘take them off, take them off NOW!!!’.

When using them a good warm up is a must; everything needs to be engorged, shall we say. You need to make sure you have a ‘taking them off’ plan, too, as leaving them on for too long can cause damage. If you do plan to use them on other areas (lips, labia, other wobbly bits), use your common sense and do your research before you start attaching them.

The verdict?

Lizzie
If you enjoy nipple play and crave intensity, these Mawa Klamps will likely to be right up your alley. They’re easy to apply and their design means they can used on various parts of the body. However, I would definitely not recommend them to beginners. These are something you want to build up to.

Thomas
Nice little low-cost clamps. Make sure they come with the hanger bar and that you keep them clean and dry when they’re not in use.

In summary …

Things we liked …

The price. Very inexpensive.

The size. These clamps are compact and don’t overwhelm the area they’re applied to.

The versatility. Can be attached to things other than nipples.

Things we weren’t so keen on …

The lack of instructions. The Mawa Klamps don’t come with any guidance as to use.

They’re very utilitarian. (Although please note that this isn’t a major negative and more a reflection of our personal taste with regard to the way we like our toys to look.)

There’s no detailed information available on the clamp construction materials. Although the components are described as ‘metal’ and ‘rubber’, it’s not clear which ones have been used. As such, those with metal or rubber allergies/sensitivities would be best to choose a product that has been guaranteed as hypoallergenic.

If you’re new to anal play, this review may be for you. Lizzie and Thomas roadtest a set of anal beads from Lovehoney’s Beginners Basic range.

First thoughts …

Lizzie
Anal toys. There are so many to choose from. Plugs, beads, dildos, hooks – from the small and slender to the eye-wateringly enormous, the choice can be both overwhelming and daunting. Although Thomas and I have played with butt plugs and anal dildos in the past, we’ve never owned a set of anal beads. These were unchartered territory. We’d heard lots of good things about them, though – in particular the effects they have when extracted at the point of orgasm. So this little sex toy road-trip was quite exciting for us – and a product orientated towards first-time users seemed a logical place to kick off our adventure.

Thomas
I’d never used anal beads before but I had heard many a story of their effectiveness when extracted during an orgasm. Since these anal beads are quite a small toy (in butt terms) I was interested to see if their performance would equal their reputation.

The packaging …

Lizzie
Really simple. The beads come in a disposable Lovehoney Beginners Basic-branded blister pack. (After removing our set from their packaging, we washed and sterilised them before transferring them to a clean snap-lock bag, ready for use.)

How they look …
Lizzie
The beads are a really attractive purple – think the lovely rich hue you see on red grapes. This particular set of anal beads is constructed from latex- and phthalate-free PVC, so they’re body-safe as well as flexible. I have to say the do have a very faint plasticky-odour, which you don’t get from silicone toys, but it’s not over-powering (to smell it, you need to hold the beads up to your nose).

Interestingly, these beads have been designed in reverse, by which I mean that the largest bead (which has a tapered tip) is at the top and the sixth and smallest bead is at the bottom, near the extraction loop. Most strings of anal beads are designed the other way around, with the smallest bead leading the way.

Thomas
The look of the beads and of the toy in general is fairly innocuous. The beads are quite small compared so some I have seen. (On initial inspection, the ones at the base seemed very ‘economy sized’ and I wasn’t sure if they would have any effect at all when used.) The loop at the end is large and secure (you don’t want to lose your new friend) and the beads are nice and smooth and sturdily connected, which is also rather important: what goes in must come out again.

In action …

Lizzie
For various reasons that I won’t bore you with, I prefer anal toys to be on the smaller side. As this set of beads has a diameter of three inches (7.62 centimetres) and a diameter of one inch (2.54 centimetres), they fall well within my comfort zone. I did wonder whether having the bigger bead at the top would make them more difficult to insert but because the lead nodule has the aforementioned tapered tip, it didn’t create any issues for us. (Thomas used loads of lube and his fingers before attempting to insert the beads, so I was properly relaxed and warmed up by the time we got to the main event.)

The beads felt really, really nice as they went in as they created gentle and intermittent feelings of pressure. The sensation was very different to that created by a plug, which gives a feeling of constant stretching during insertion. I liked that I wasn’t overwhelmed by the sensation. The back-to-front design also made it easy for my body to hold the beads in place.

Thomas waited until I was actually climaxing before pulling the beads out and, unquestionably, the feeling of them being removed definitely enhanced my orgasm – although I must admit it did feel a little odd and unfamiliar the first time around. Not at all unpleasant – just unusual. I also liked that the most intense sensation came last, as the biggest bead was withdrawn.

Thomas
The beads are easy to insert, provided your partner has been suitably warmed up and lubed to within an inch of their life (always the golden rule of anal play). At around six inches long, they’re not hard to control – and they are flexible so shouldn’t present any problems going in or coming out. Once in place, they are easy to remove at the point of orgasm thanks to the large loop, which is very easy to hold on to. Just be gentle on removal unless you’re an anal veteran – more of an easy action than trying to start a lawnmower, etc.

These did have the desired effect on Lizzie when removed at the critical moment, and on the second or third removal (they are easy to reinsert once your partner’s acclimatised to them) she was really ‘getting in the mood’ as far as this toy was concerned. A case of familiarity breeds enjoyment, so to speak.

Any downsides?

Lizzie
Other than the vague PVC smell, no.

Thomas
Not sure the small beads do much. Make sure you buy some toy cleaner and keep them scrupulously clean.

The verdict?

Lizzie
An inexpensive set of anal beads that are perfect for those who are new to anal play or like their anal toys on the more modest side. There’s some ‘give’ in the PVC and the reverse design is excellent; having the biggest bead ‘first in and last out’ really makes this toy stand out.

Thomas
A nice little toy. Good for beginners and in no way threatening.

In summary

Things we liked:

The price. Sub £10.00.

The design. Placing the largest bead at the head of the toy really enhances sensations – particularly at the point of extraction.

Ease of cleaning. Can be washed with anti-bacterial soap and coated with toy cleaner.

Things we weren’t so keen on:

The smell. These aren’t entirely odour-free.

First thoughts …

Lizzie
A couple of months ago, Thomas and I had a major toy box clean out. We threw out a load of stuff – things that we’d bought and didn’t like, mostly, but also some toys that we’d enjoyed and thought were past their use-by date. Amongst them, a monstrously large dildo that Thomas purchased for me as a birthday present. It was an awful, flesh-coloured thing that was eye-wateringly large (he didn’t check the size properly before ordering it – or so he told me) and smelled strongly of latex. So strongly, in fact, you could smell it halfway across the room if the lid on our toy box wasn’t shut properly. Still, we had quite a bit of fun with it before it was eventually consigned to the dustbin, although I can’t say it really sold me on dildos generally; vibrators always seemed to have far more to offer. Needless to say, I was pretty ambivalent about the Spartacus Smooth G-Spot Dildo. Turns out, I grossly underestimated what a well-designed, well-made toy could do for me.

Thomas
My last dildo purchase for Lizzie was less than 100% satisfactory, although I think she quite liked the size ;-). It did look and smell awful; think John Holmes on steroids complete with ‘realistic veins’ (the manufacturer’s words on the packaging, not mine) and ‘realistic’ meaning varicose, apparently. The packaging was also a bit crap. I never showed it to Lizzie as it was too embarrassing (it featured a male model who looked like disturbingly like David Hasselhoff with some major Photoshop-ing having been done on his genitals) and I can see why they didn’t show this on the site I brought it from.

The packaging …

Lizzie
I really appreciate it when toy manufacturers cater to both genders, i.e. don’t plaster big-boobed, de-haired women all over their packaging. It immediately makes me more inclined to buy their products again. This Spartacus glass dildo is presented in a simple, black, hexagonal box with clean font. It’s completely neutral, in other words; you could buy it and give it to a man or woman without worrying that the branding was (potentially) going to send the wrong message, i.e. “I want you to be a porn star!”

How it looks …

Lizzie
Pretty! The dildo is made of mid-blue blown glass and beautifully shaped. The shaft, which has an insertable length of 6 inches (approximately 15.5 centimetres), runs at a consistent width and then flares out to create a bulb-shaped head with a diameter of 4.75 inches (12 centimetres) at its widest point. The latter crooks forwards slightly, giving it the all-important ability to stimulate the G-Spot. At the dildo’s base, a simple ring that allows the person wielding it slip their fingers through and thus get (and maintain) a decent grip on the toy.

Thomas
Much better than our original monster. It looks like it could be a glass sculpture or a paperweight. The packaging is also subtle and low-key so you won’t feel like a member of the old mac brigade if you give one as a gift. Well-made and very smooth with no visible cracks or joins (a must in a glass dildo); it’s even got a ring you can hang it on. Handy.

In action …

Lizzie
Two words. Female ejaculation. I have experienced this orgasm-induced side effect quite a few times before but generally find it easier to achieve with Thomas’s fingers (although G-Spot vibrators also do the job). There was something about the Spartacus dildo’s shape, however, that got me there faster and more easily than either digits or my usual toy-partner in crime, the LELO Gigi. The head of the dildo, when angled correctly, felt wonderful when pressed and rubbed against my G-Spot and, as far as I’m concerned, the size and design of it are pretty close to perfect. I had four ejaculatory orgasms in the space of an hour with this thing (no lie) although Thomas was the one in the driver’s seat, so I have to give him a large chunk of the credit for using the dildo to such devastating effect.

Material-wise, the Spartacus felt wonderful. The glass was beautifully smooth and slippery and I especially liked the way it changed temperature during use. (To start with, it was very cool but as it absorbed my body heat, it became warmer and warmer.)

I found that the best way to use this toy was standing and bent forwards over a soft chair; the position gave Thomas a decent amount of room to manoeuvre and also allowed him some scope to get the dildo in the correct position. In addition, he was able to press the head of the dildo against the front wall of my vagina more easily (no fighting gravity) – and thus target my G-Spot.

Thomas
I didn’t know to start with this was a G-Spot dildo, although the shape looked about right for one so once we got down to business, I started to see how effective it would be for stimulating this area. Extremely effective, as it turned out.

I could tell it was certainly hitting the spot (so to speak) with Lizzie but it soon became very obvious that it was really hitting it. Lizzie has ejaculated a number of times before but this was by far the quickest and the most frequent I have seen, so much so that the line from that Bloodhound Gang song ‘love the kind you clean up with a mop and a bucket’ springs to mind. I could have stopped after the first one but I don’t like letting Lizzie off too easily so I thought I would push the boat out.

The reason I think this dildo works so well is because of the shape of its large, angled head. It caught Lizzie in just the right place inside and I could feel it moving over her pelvic bone (which is the sweet spot for her), so it was relatively simple to position. Also the ring on the base makes it easy to get a good grip and to get the head in at just the right angle (which is much harder to do with just the shaft on a normal dildo).

Any downsides?

Lizzie
None that I can think of. I’m in love with this thing!

The verdict?

Lizzie
A really fabulous dildo that looks good, is well made, and shaped like a dream. It’s very easy to clean, too, as it can be sterilised in the dishwasher. I suspect this toy is going to be brought out often and that it’s going to result in a quite a few soaked towels, sheets and floors. Great fun to use with a partner and highly (highly) recommended to those who enjoy or climax from G-Spot stimulation. Even better, although we had plenty of fun during our inaugural session with this dildo, there’s lots of scope to mix things up in the future as the glass construction means that we can warm it in a basin of water or cool it in the fridge or freezer before use. (The idea of the frozen glass being put somewhere hot holds a lot of appeal – rather like an ice cube but far less messy!)

Thomas
I have never used a glass dildo before but I have to say I am sold on this one; it looks good, has outstanding performance and is very practical. I also think the ability for it to be frozen will add extra thrills (and the odd shock) for Lizzie in the future.

In summary

Things we liked:

The orgasms it produced. Full-on, full-out female ejaculation.

The glass construction. Attractive and easy to clean.

The play possibilities. Can be heated or cooled safely.

Phthalate-free. No nasty chemicals and especially good for those with latex allergies.

Lube-friendly. Because this dildo is made of glass, it can be used with all types of lubricants (oil-, silicone- or water-based).

Things we weren’t so keen on:

Nothing!

The Wartenberg pinwheel, while originally invented as a medical device for neurological use has become something of a BDSM staple over the years. So what does one feel like? Should you be afraid of those rather sharp looking spikes? Lizzie and Thomas find out.

First thoughts …

Lizzie
I’ve wanted to try a Wartenberg pinwheel for ages but, for various reasons, Thomas and I just never seemed to get around to purchasing one. As you’ve probably gathered from my previous toy reviews, I’m not averse to a bit of pain during sex but, on balance, my experience runs to impact and pressure toys (such as floggers, paddles and clamps), so anything sharp has the power to make me shiver a little.

This device takes its name from American neurologist, Robert Wartenberg, who designed it to test nerve reactions (sensitivity) in patients, but, per Jane’s introduction to this post, the wheel has become quite popular with those who enjoy BDSM. There are a few different Wartenberg designs out there but, in essence, they’re pretty much identical from a form and function perspective. You’re basically dealing with a wheel of sharp, metal spikes (attached to a handle) that rotates when it’s run over the skin.

Thomas
It looks like a cross between a medieval torture device and some kind of dentist’s tool. I keep having flashbacks Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man. It is surprising sharp – don’t drop it on you foot – but it is stainless steel, so can be hygienically cleaned. (That said, as it’s possible for this toy to break the skin, I would suggest it only be used on one person or be shared by monogamous couples.)

NB: I’m curious as to how effective the Wartenberg is for measuring nerve damage in a patient; in my experience, if you poke someone with something as sharp as this, you’re going to get a reaction. Possibly a black eye. Just saying.

The packaging …

Lizzie
Very simple. The Wartenberg pinwheel we ordered from Bondara arrived in a slim, plastic pouch, one side of which is see-through. No visible branding but it’s not a big or complicated toy (the pinwheel is only 7 inches in length) so it doesn’t really need anything fancy.

Using it …

Lizzie
As soon as the Wartenberg arrived, I got it out of the packet and started prodding the spikes with my fingers – there are 20 on the wheel in total – to see just how sharp they were. (Very, as it turns out.) I then ran it experimentally over the insides of my arms, at first lightly and then with a little more force. While I didn’t yelp at the feelings it generated, the pinwheel definitely had some bite; it left imprints on the skin when I applied it with what I would call an ‘average’ pressure and as it tracked across my arm, a prickling sensation lingered for a short time in its wake.

Our first ‘proper’ use of the Wartenberg wheel took place a day or so after its arrival. Thomas decided to use it on me as part of a sensation play session, combining the prickle of the Wartenberg with the much softer touch of an ostrich feather we keep in our toy box. In addition, he blindfolded me so that I was unable to tell which implement I’d be experiencing ahead of time. Needless to say, after being stroked with something very light and silky, the spikes of the Wartenberg wheel came as a massive shock, despite the fact that I knew Thomas was going to use it on me. There was much gripping of sheets (and maybe a stifled cry or two) as the wheel made its way over my back and bottom. Because even though I knew from playing with it myself that Thomas would have to press relatively firmly to break my skin, it felt like the spikes were going to do so at any moment. On more tender areas – the crease between the buttocks, for example – and skin sensitised through impact play (in addition to the ostrich feather, Thomas introduced our crop partway through our session), the Wartenberg’s power increased exponentially.

Bluntly, this is an evil, evil little toy – and I don’t mean that as a criticism. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I was really shocked by how much power such a small thing had over me. The sensations the Wartenberg pinwheel generated were incredibly intense and the threat of it breaking the skin felt very real when it was being run over me.

Thomas
I wasn’t too sure how to approach this one – as Lizzie mentioned, sharp toys are new for us – so I figured a mix of surprise and soft/hard would be the way to go.

Using the pinwheel certainly got quite a reaction from Lizzie (kinky tart), especially when mixed in with soft stroking and some spanking/cropping to sensitize the skin. Only light pressure is needed, unless of course you’re into more serious edge play, and you need to be careful where you use it (very sensitive areas need to be built up to). I found the best way was to run it around very slowly over well-spanked areas, but I am sure it will work well used anywhere your partner is sensitive.

The verdict?

Lizzie
I actually find it quite hard to articulate my feelings about this particular toy as the sensations it generates are so unique. It plays a head-game with you because, mentally, you register its sharpness as a significant threat. And that’s its appeal; it has teeth (literally) and requires you to have total trust in your partner. A really great D/s toy that I would say is a toy box essential for those who enjoy sensation play. I like it a lot – but I’m also a bit scared of it!

Thomas
All I can say is I haven’t heard Lizzie moan like that in a while. It generated a remarkable level of moisture – which, obviously, told me that she found the effects of the Wartenberg pinwheel a real turn-on. A great toy for something so simple but I would use sparingly to keep it exciting.

In summary …

Things we liked:

The sensation it generates. The prickling feeling as the pinwheel moves over the skin is very unusual.

The size. A nice, small toy that can be stored easily.

The reactions it induces. It’s very hard to be indifferent to those spikes!

The mental stimulation the device induces. The Wartenberg pinwheel requires a level of trust between those using it. A great toy to bond with, especially if you enjoy D/s.

Things we weren’t so keen on:

Could be very hard to explain at an airport customs (being metal and all).

I can’t quite believe it but Behind the Chintz Curtain has been live for three months as of today.

Nearly 3,000 of you have visited since the first post went up and every day, more and more of you stop by. So a massive ‘thank you’ to all my regulars, and a warm ‘hello’ to those who are here for the first time.

Sixty posts in (this is number sixty one) and guess what the most popular entry has been so far? No real surprise – it’s Lizzie’s Fifty Shades of Grey-inspired review of jiggle balls, which is sitting at the top of the pile with over 500 pageviews. But I think E.L. James’s ben was may be in for a bit of competition; also making appearances in the top ten, C is for clitoris, c is for clip and the wonderfully erotic Victorian birching story, Uncle Charles’ Girls by Anne Randolph. (Clearly, there’s call for more toys in the Toy Box and some red-bottomed literature!)

Finally, I’d like to take the opportunity to say ‘thanks’ to the members of the BDSM group on Goodreads who have been so wonderful and generous with their time, providing feedback and advice as I write The Garden of Earthly Delights. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.
